Reduced dry season fish biomass and depleted carnivorous fish assemblages in unprotected tropical oxbow lakes

چکیده

The effectiveness of protected areas in maintaining biodiversity is increasingly under debate. Specifically, the responses animal populations freshwater ecosystems to disturbances outside are not well understood. Fish assemblages can serve as an indicator such responses. We used dry season oxbow lake fish occurrence data implemented within a Measurement Biodiversity framework examine influence extractive activities on richness, structure and abundance assemblages. compared lakes with subject artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) other human activities. main components maintained by protection were biomass. strongest predictors community fishing intensity water transparency. As variation these factors likely consequence ASGM, our results may indicate indirect impacts ASGM ecosystems. Our analysis trophic guilds also suggested that carnivores dominated lakes, whereas disturbed detritivores more frequent, suggesting downgrading ASGM. Taken together, activity associated In western Amazon, isolated appear be successful at integrity Given vulnerability habitats their high value for ecosystem services, we recommend local engagement resource allocation prevent degradation depletion aquatic unprotected areas.

Biomass spectra in benthic fish assemblages in the Benguela System

B~ornass spectra in the different benthic fish assemblages at depths between 100 and 800 m off the coast of Namibia were studied over a p e r ~ o d of 3 yr These assemblages were located in areas spanning active upwelling centres on the shelf and zones of lower productiv~ty on the lower slope. The slopes of the curves for the normallzed size distributions were related to zonal productivity and ...

Convergence of temperate and tropical stream fish assemblages

The hypothesis of convergence takes the deterministic view that community (or assemblage) structure can be predicted from the environment, and that the environment is expected to drive evolution in a predictable direction. Here we present results of a comparative study of freshwater fish assemblages from headwater streams in four continents (Europe, North America, Africa and South America), wit...

Habitat Specialization in Tropical Continental Shelf Demersal Fish Assemblages

The implications of shallow water impacts such as fishing and climate change on fish assemblages are generally considered in isolation from the distribution and abundance of these fish assemblages in adjacent deeper waters. We investigate the abundance and length of demersal fish assemblages across a section of tropical continental shelf at Ningaloo Reef, Western Australia, to identify fish and...

Response of Brazos River Oxbow Fish Assemblages to Patterns of Hydrologic Connectivity and Environmental Variability

—Three oxbow lakes with different connection frequencies and an adjacent reach of the middle Brazos River, Texas, were surveyed quarterly from summer 1993 to summer 1996 to examine the effects of hydrology and physicochemical attributes on fish assemblage structure. During flood events, oxbows usually were colonized by about 20 fish species from the river channel, and several fluvial specialist...

How does the Taquari River influence in the cladoceran assemblages in three oxbow lakes?

This study examined the cladoceran assemblages in three oxbow lakes of the Taquari River floodplain, near the transition between the plateau and the plain. We sought to answer the following questions: does the Taquari River function as a geographical barrier or dispersal corridor for Cladocera? Can different degrees of connection induce different structures in the assemblages in each lake? Clad...
